President’s MessageMichelle Schaap Welcome (back) to New Jersey Women Lawyers Association. On behalf of the entire board, we look forward to seeing you at our events and programming this coming year. Since our last communique, on May 14, our members had the opportunity to hear insights from Hon. Freda Wolfson, Hon. Lois Goodman, Hon. Karen Cassidy and Hon. Kimarie Rahill as they were walked through the anatomy of a legal case. Their insights were invaluable to the audience. Thank you to K&L Gates for their generous support. On June 12, our Young Lawyers Committee, together with the HBA and Seton Hall, hosted a wonderful evening of networking and fashion for young women in the legal profession. Thank you to Sills Cummis & Gross for its sponsorship. Then, on June 18, NJWLA, together with ECBF, hosted its Seventh Annual Fore Ladies Only Golf Outing. Cedar Hill Country Club was the scene for a wonderful day of instruction, fun and networking. We are grateful for all of our sponsors for this terrific day. On July 18, ECBA, NJWLA, HBA, IWIRC – NJ, NJSBA – WIPS, Seton Hall Law School Women’s Law Forum and TMANJ joined together for an evening of networking at the Essex Fells Country Club. Over 75 women came together and shared resources and good food. Looking to the coming year, I would like to share with you all my four primary goals for this year: Representing the many faces of New Jersey Women Lawyers. Expanding our commitment to programs and charities supporting women. Engaging more young attorneys, through mentoring and programming to prepare young attorneys for leadership roles Programming to support our members in all phases of their careers and lives, as young attorneys, as business generators, and when in transition and looking toward retirement. We will continue our partnerships with other New Jersey Affinity Bar Associations to facilitate cross-networking, sharing CLE programming and benefitting from diverse insights to a variety of topics and issues. We are re-launching our mentoring program this fall. If you are interested in serving as a mentor, or are looking for a mentor, please look for our upcoming announcement and the forms to enable you to participate in this valuable program. On behalf of the entire board, we look forward to you all being a part of a terrific year for NJWLA. NJWLA Gives BackNJWLA board members (and their family members) had an opportunity to help out at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey on Tuesday, May 8th. We learned about the organization, its mission and its reach – 19 of New Jersey’s 21 counties are served by the FoodBank. We met some wonderful people and were able to help sort donations. NJWLA looks forward to another opportunity to give back! Summer NetworkingNJWLA joined the Essex County Bar Foundation, the Hispanic Bar Association-NJ, IWIRC-NJ Network, New Jersey State Bar Association Women in the Profession Section, Seton Hall Law School Women’s Law Forum and TMANJ in hosting the annual Summer Women’s Networking Event. Over 100 people joined at the Essex Fells Country Club for a night of conversation, cocktails and delicious fare. |
