Committee Spotlight
In-House Committee

The In-House Committee of the New Jersey Women Lawyers Association welcomes female lawyers living and/or working in New Jersey, or the surrounding area, who currently work in-house and who wish to network, discuss issues, share ideas, and keep up to date on all matters of importance to women lawyers who work in-house. This committee’s mission is to allow a place for local, female in-house lawyers to ask questions, share insight, and build relationships with other local, female in-house lawyers in order to share resources, seek and provide support, and engage in an open dialogue concerning issues and challenges that are unique to women in-house lawyers. The In-House Committee hosts at least two events each year, which are developed around themes that are relevant to in-house lawyers.

On June 7, 2017, the In-House Committee hosted a roundtable session entitled “It’s a Jungle Gym Scramble Out There! Making Smart Career Moves”. The event was held at McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter and featured a distinguished group of panelists, including Hope Blackburn, General Counsel, Jersey City Public Schools; Beth Zelnick Kaufman, VP, Legal Affairs, Amneal Pharmaceuticals; and Mary Clare Garber, VP, Princeton Legal Search. The discussion centered on tenure in the same position, managing career and personal demands, transferrable skills, and how to transition from one job or industry to another, as well as the challenges and opportunities surrounding career moves. The session provided 1.8 hours of CLE credit.

Committee Spotlight
Judicial Outreach Committee

The Judicial Outreach Committee plans and hosts multiple events during the year that foster interaction between our membership and members of our judiciary. The events are intended to allow the judiciary not only to participate, but also to share with our members insights regarding their roles as advocates and on the bench, their path to leadership, and the lessons that they have learned along the way. Each year the committee hosts a Judicial Panel, where a panel of judges discuss an issue affecting women attorneys in New Jersey, as well as Tales from the Bench, a luncheon series with women judges.

In the fall of 2016, the Committee hosted the fifth Tales from the Bench with the Honorable Harriet F. Klein, J.S.C. (Ret.). In June 2017, the Committee hosted the Judicial Panel, with four distinguished federal judges: the Honorable Madeline Cox Arleo, the Honorable Leda Dunn Wettre, the Honorable Stacey L. Meisel and the Honorable Cathy L. Waldor. The judges discussed “First Chair: Why Are So Few Women Lead Counsel and How Do We Get Seats at the Table.” The Committee also hosted its sixth Tales from the Bench in June of 2017, with Supreme Court Justice Anne Patterson as the guest of honor.

Annual Law Day Program

For a number of years, NJWLA has participated in the NJ State Bar Association’s Court Night Program by planning and presenting a Law Day Program for high school students. Following our successful and well-received 2016 Program on Miranda v. Arizona, at J.P. Stevens High School, NJWLA was invited back to share Law Day presentations in 2017, and also expanded the presentation to an additional high school, Edison High School. The 2017 Law Day Program, led by Executive Board Member, Susan Kleiner, and Board Member, Nancy Lottinville, engaged several NJWLA volunteers with interest and experience in a range of 14th Amendment issues, to make presentations on the topic of the 14th Amendment and how it has transformed American Democracy. The presentations were made to over 250 students in several social studies/humanties classes (including AP Government and Law) enabling NJWLA to reach out and enhance the educational experience of the students. NJWLA is proud of the continuing success of the program. Many thanks to Susan Kleiner, Nancy Lottinville, and Elyse Wolff along with attorney volunteers, Hon. Maureen Vella (J.M.C.) and W. Lois Kahagi, for the time, effort and expertise that helped to make this year’s program such a success!

Message from the President

Annmarie Simeone

Greetings from NJWLA! We hope you have had a wonderful summer and have been able to enjoy some well-earned rest and relaxation. On behalf of the NJWLA Board, I am excited to welcome all of our members to what will surely be another successful year for our organization. Our committees are already hard at work planning another year filled with programming in support of the NJWLA mission, including professional development and educational programs, networking functions, and outreach activities that will support our membership. Before we jump into the busy fall season, this is a good time to reflect upon all that NJWLA has been involved with since our last newsletter.

Our activities did not slow down in the summer months! On June 7th, NJWLA’s In-House Committee presented “It’s a Jungle Gym Scramble Out There – Making Smart Career Moves.” This program (which you can read more about in the Committee Spotlight section of this edition of our newsletter) was led by a panel addressing career progression for in-house women attorneys. Thanks to McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter for hosting this event.

The next day, NJWLA was honored to be able to present its 2017 Judicial Panel at the federal courthouse in Newark. Thank you to our esteemed panelists: Honorable Madeline Cox Arleo, Honorable Leda Dunn Wettre, Honorable Stacey L. Meisel and Honorable Cathy L. Waldor. NJWLA greatly appreciated their time and valuable insight. We invite you to read more about this program in the Committee Spotlight section of the newsletter. This annual program was generously sponsored by K&L Gates, and moderated by Loly Tor.

On June 23rd, NJWLA held its Tales from the Bench luncheon. A packed room of about 30 women were thrilled to enjoy an engaging discussion with New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Anne Patterson, who graciously shared her time and honest dialogue. Many thanks to Justice Patterson for an enlightening discussion, and to Fox Rothschild for hosting this program.

On July 13th, several NJWLA members joined with other professional women’s associations at picturesque Green Brook Country Club for the “Empowered Women Empower Women” networking event, which offered members a casual atmosphere to catch up with friends and colleagues.

A few short days later, on July 18th, the full NJWLA Board was installed for the 2017-18 year, with the Honorable Lois H. Goodman, U.S.M.J. once again graciously administering the oath at Colonia Country Club in Colonia, New Jersey.

On July 24th, NJWLA and the Essex County Bar Foundation held their Sixth Annual “Fore Ladies Only” Golf Outing and Clinic. Despite a questionable forecast, the weather cooperated, offering about 50 women the chance to enjoy a day of golf and comradery at Cedar Hill Golf & Country Club in Livingston. Each year a charitable partner is chosen for this event and, this year, the generosity of those in attendance, allowed for a donation to Partners For Women & Justice, a non-profit organization providing free legal help in New Jersey to low income, abused victims of domestic violence. Finally, many thanks are owed to the event sponsors. This year’s luncheon was generously sponsored by Hudson Reporting, and the on course beverage cart was sponsored by Max Title Agency. We also must thank our several Tee Sponsors: Chiesa, Shahinian & Giantomasi; Newsome O’Donnell; McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter, Norris McLaughlin & Marcus; Coughlin Duffy; Veritext; Provident; Withum, and the American Cancer Society.

Year after year, NJWLA has continued to grow its membership, and this (as well as many valued sponsors) has enabled NJWLA to offer a very active schedule of programs and events, providing a place for New Jersey women lawyers to network, enhance their practices, and their professional development. This year, we anticipate again presenting a number of programs that will offer CLE credit, and we plan to continue our outreach to the community by pairing our substantive programming with charitable partners whose work is consistent with the NJWLA mission. We look forward to another great year for NJWLA!
