Research & Writing Attorney Appellate & Capital Litigation

The Office of the Federal Public Defender for the District of New Jersey has an opening for a Research & Writing Attorney, whose work would include appellate and capital litigation, particularly in federal death-penalty appeals in this and other circuits. The Attorney would be stationed in our office in either Newark or Camden, New Jersey, but the position may allow for some telecommuting. The Attorney would work with the Federal Public Defender and Assistant Federal Public Defenders in this and other districts to provide legal research and writing services in support of the representation of indigent defendants in federal court appealing from their convictions and sentences, in both regular and capital cases. As part of a team and/or in consultation with other counsel, the Attorney would, among other tasks, compile and review appellate records; perform computer-assisted legal research, develop legal strategies, and draft appellate briefs and other pleadings.

To qualify, applicants must be a graduate of an ABA-accredited law school and a member of the bar in at least one state, in good standing. The applicant must have excellent writing, research, and analytical skills; a high degree of computer literacy; and the ability to prioritize and to work independently and cooperatively. It is also strongly preferred that the applicant have some experience with capital litigation.

This is a full-time position with federal salary and benefits based on qualifications and experience, within federal guidelines. To apply, send resumé, three references, and a writing sample to Richard Coughlin, Federal Public Defender, by March 10, 2016. All materials should be sent by e-mail to NJFPDResume@fd.org.

This office is an equal opportunity employer.
