Position: Domestic Violence/Family Law Attorney
Organization: Partners for Women and Justice empowers low-income and abused women to build safe and secure futures for themselves and their children by providing equal access to justice. We offer quality legal assistance in domestic violence and family law matters.
Partners for Women and Justice seeks an enthusiastic and caring Staff Attorney to help victims of domestic violence escape abuse by assisting them in obtaining restraining orders, financial support and safe custody and visitation arrangements for their children.
Staff Attorney Responsibilities:
- Provide direct legal representation to clients in domestic violence and related proceedings, including final restraining orders, custody, visitation and child support, in Superior Court of New Jersey, primarily Essex and Union Counties
- Provide advice and counsel to victims of domestic violence who represent themselves
- Stay abreast of developments in the law of domestic violence and family law
- Participate in court committees, professional organizations, and other activities, including Domestic Violence Working Group meetings, to address systemic issues affecting the client population
- Represent Partners for Women and Justice to, and support collaboration with, other community based agencies, including community outreach
- Conduct presentations and participate in trainings to promote the mission of the organization; be available as needed to talk to funders and donors; some evening meetings necessary
- Assist with grant development and reporting and with data collection
- Keep client information current in database
Qualifications:
- Admission to practice law, and in good standing, in New Jersey
- Relevant judicial clerkship, trial experience, or clinical program experience
- Excellent writing and oral advocacy skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
- Proficient in use of computer and software applications (Word, Excel, etc.)
- Experience in family law preferred
- Ability to speak Spanish or a second language is a plus
