Job Description:

Avaya is seeking a highly-motivated attorney with experience managing both commercial and employment litigation and providing guidance on labor and employment matters.

Reporting to the head of Employment, Labor & Litigation, you will be responsible for providing legal advice on a wide range of employment, labor and business matters, managing outside counsel, providing subject matter expertise on key employment policies and documentation, and collaborating with Human Resources and key leaders on business issues and employee relations, training, policies and related activities.  This position will be based in Basking Ridge, NJ.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage commercial and employment litigation, including matters outside the US.
  • Provide advice on business issues in order to avoid commercial litigation; implement risk mitigation strategies.
  • Provide advice on broad range of employment matters including recruiting, hiring, benefits, compensation, employee relations and terminations.
  • Draft separation agreements, policies, letters, non-standard employment related agreements and other communications as needed.
  • Identify emerging policy issues in employment law and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Assist and/or coordinate internal investigations.
  • Provide guidance with respect to U.S. labor and employment laws such as ERISA, EO, FMLA, NLRA, employee privacy, and benefit plans.
  • Advise on strategic HR projects and employment aspects of mergers and acquisitions.

Qualifications:

  • 6-8 years of legal experience after graduating law school with at least 5+ years of experience in private or corporate legal practice, with an emphasis in labor and employment law.
  • Ability to gain credibility and trust of management and employees to quickly gain the confidence and respect of others by providing practical, timely, and sound counsel.
  • Significant experience with management side labor and employment issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • In-house counsel or comparable counseling experience preferred.
  • Analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, negotiation and legal reasoning skills.
  • Ability to manage issues and workload independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent business judgment and strategic thinking.
  • Strong organizational skills and flexibility.
  • Possess a license to practice law in the U.S.
