Assistant Federal Public Defender – NEWARK

The Federal Public Defender for the District of New Jersey is seeking a full time, experienced trial attorney for the branch office in Newark. More than one vacancy may be filled from this announcement. Federal salary and benefits apply.

Applicants must have at least three years criminal law or appellate experience, be team oriented, exhibit strong writing skills as well as a commitment to criminal defense. Writing ability, federal court experience, Spanish fluency, and trial experience will be given preference. Membership in the New Jersey Bar is expected within two years of employment. The private practice of law is prohibited.

If selected, the applicant will be subject to a background investigation. The federal Public Defender operates under the authority of the Criminal Justice Act, 18 U.S.C. § 3006A, and provides legal representation in federal criminal cases and related matters in federal court. The position is “at will” excepted service, and does not carry the tenure rights of competitive civil service. The Federal Public Defender is an equal opportunity employer.
