New York Law School (NYLS) is seeking adjunct faculty to be one of several who will teach a first-year legal study skills course to students in the Evening Division.
This position will report to the Associate Dean for Academic and Bar Success.
Responsibilities
Under the guidance and supervision of the Associate Dean for Academic and Bar Success, the adjunct professor will be teaching Foundations for the Study of Law (FSL), which is a required first-year course designed to teach students the foundational skills necessary for learning, studying, and understanding legal concepts. FSL, a five-month course, will meet for one hour and 40 minutes once per week during business hours.
Teaching the course each week will require class preparation, which will include watching doctrinal class recordings and lesson planning. The adjunct professor will be given standardized course materials for teaching study skills, but the professor will have opportunities to customize lesson plans and to bring their professional experience into the classroom.
FSL is a pass/fail course, but the adjunct professor will be responsible for providing a cohort of students with individualized feedback on assignments and ensuring that students complete all required assignments. The adjunct professor must be reasonably available to meet with students upon request, which may include being available to speak with students on the phone or via web video conference occasionally on weekends. The time allocated to meetings one-on-one with students and providing feedback on assignments will vary by week.
In addition, in the spring semester, the adjunct professor will be required to meet with first-year students in the Evening Division who are placed
on academic probation at the start of the spring semester. The Associate Dean for Academic and Bar Success will support the adjunct professor’s
work with the students on probation.
The professor will be provided with opportunities for professional development and training on learning theory and pedagogy.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor from ABA accredited law school, license to practice law in the United States.
- 1–3 years of practice experience. Adjunct teaching experience is highly valued.
- Superior written, oral, and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to work collaboratively with all members of the law school community.
- Evening availability and some weekend availability required.
