Reserve your seat today for this unique opportunity to hear directly from best-selling author, award-winning actor, writer, and director Alan Alda, as he shares proven strategies for communicating better – based on acting, improv, empathy, science, and storytelling.
As the host of Scientific American Frontiers (PBS), Alan Alda has interviewed scientists, physicists, neuroscientists, and academics. The success he had in forging a connection with these guests through these freewheeling improvisational conversations propelled him on a quest to develop new ways to communicate complex ideas more effectively. He founded the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University, which has trained scientists, doctors, and more, to communicate more effectively with the public. Now, Alda shares powerful lessons from the science of communication, showing us how to build empathy and improve the way we talk to and relate to others using improv games, storytelling, and our own innate abilities to read the true thoughts and feelings of others.
With his trademark humor and frankness, Alda explains what makes these techniques he developed so impactful. This program digs into the heart of what it means to be a true communicator: listening with our eyes; looking for clues in the face; shaping our message into a compelling story; being able to read another person so well you know how to respond to what they’re thinking and feeling – especially when you have to discuss difficult subjects. Alda has seen this kind of engagement facilitate real communication in a wide range of settings: within families, at the office, between doctors and patients, and between scientists and the rest of us.
Our program begins with our own NJICLE round table of “celebrity” attorneys and judges who will discuss communication issues in the law. They will cover ways of communicating with your clients, judges, juries and your adversaries to get your point across, help you be a better counselor and a more effective lawyer.
We will then turn the program over to Alan Alda so that we can all benefit from the accumulated wisdom of this master communicator.
