Political party leaders have a role in selecting and electing candidates for office and appointments. They influence public policy and the flow of government business. One in four NJ Legislators are lawyers. In the mid-19th century, nearly 80 percent of members of the U.S. Congress were lawyers. Today 40 percent are lawyers. In the United States 24 percent (30 percent in NJ) of the 7000 plus state legislative seats are held by women. Women hold 20 percent of the seats in the U.S. Congress.

Pursuant to NJ Election Law County, State and National Party Committees run the Republican and Democratic parties in NJ.  Committee members must run for office.  These men and women elect county party chairs and choose candidates to run for various offices.     State Committee Members elect New Jersey representatives to the RNC and the DNC and to the subcommittees of these organizations. They also approve delegate rules in their respective states.
