Title: Deputy Counsel (2 positions)

Location: Office of Legislative Services, Central Management Unit
State House Annex, West State Street, Trenton, New Jersey

Salary: $48,513.74 per year ($49,484.02 after six months satisfactory performance)

Description: As a member of the professional non-partisan staff of the New Jersey State Legislature, staff professionals provide a variety of staff services for legislators, legislative staff, and legislative committees and commissions. Professional staff draft, review, and analyze legislation and provide research and analysis on issues and policy matters of legislative concern. Professional staff communicate with legislators, legislative staff, public and private representatives, and members of the public. Professional staff in a counsel title are also required to conduct legal research and write legal opinions.

The position requires advanced analytical, research, and quantitative skills. Professional staff are required to convey complex subject matter information clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing. A background in federal and State taxation is preferred for one of the current vacancies.

New professional staff are provided with an initial training period to obtain a working knowledge of legislative operations, procedures, and customs and to learn the fundamentals of agency policies and procedures for providing non-partisan legislative services, including bill drafting, research and legal opinions. At the conclusion of the initial training period, new professional staff will be assigned to a specific subject matter section according to the needs of the agency.

Requirements

Education: Graduation from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association and admission to the New Jersey Bar.

Experience: This is an entry-level position.

Residency: Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 52:14-7, also known as the “New Jersey First Act,” all persons newly hired by the Office of Legislative Services shall have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey.
